Frank Ocean Lands First Solo Magazine Cover

Odd Future’s Frank Ocean continues his fast come-up with his first solo magazine cover.  The singer, who’s most recent work can be heard on Watch the Throne, is on the double cover of Fader Magazine’s Fall Fashion issue.  Text excerpt from his story:

“When he was nine, Frank Ocean’s godfather subscribed him to Robb Report, a magazine for the ultra-rich. Less interested in fiduciary smarts, it’s a catalog of conspicuous consumption, highlighting tropical vacations, invaluable antiques and, as Ocean came to know, really expensive cars. Though he comes from a middle class family, he obsessively read the magazine’s classified ads, fixating on exorbitantly priced used Bentleys and Maybachs. “I would just fall in love with all their cars. That was the start.” Ocean, whowas born Christopher Breaux (and goes by Lonny to friends), downscaled his material desires, and when he was 13, began going door-to-door, detailing cars for cash. “I would bring all my supplies. Literally, it was like a movie, I had a wagon, those long red wagons, like a Radio Flyer-type wagon, and I used to buy my own soaps.”

Beyonce Talks Frank Ocean, Jay-Z and R&B Music in Complex

Beyonce looks like a queen on the cover of Complex Magazine’s August 2011 issue.  Inside, she’s gushing about her hubby, talking about bringing classic R&B to the radio and what gets on her nerves.  Interview highlights below:

On 4’s R&B sound:

“Figuring out a way to get R&B back on the radio is challenging.  Everything sounds the same on the radio. With 4 I tried to mix R&B from the ’70s and the ’90s with rock ‘n’ roll and a lot of horns to create something new and exciting. I wanted musical changes, bridges, vibrata, live instrumentation, and classic songwriting.”

On Frank Ocean:

“Jay had a CD playing in the car one Sunday when we were driving to Brooklyn.  I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling. I immediately reached out to him—literally the next morning. I asked him to fly to New York and work on my record.”

On recognizing hit songs:

“I’ve found that with hit records the melody and lyrics come together [naturally].  I usually know from the hook if the song is something that transcends language, race, and genre, and if it’s something that affects pop culture. It’s something I can visualize people singing in stadiums all over the world. But my favorite songs on my albums are usually not my singles.”

On Jay-Z:

“Jay’s music is more than music. His lyrics have fathered generations.  All that he has overcome gives millions so much hope. There are moments when I see his lips moving and I can see lyrics floating above his head and I think, ‘Wow! How did I get so lucky to be able to witness this level of genius so closely?’”

On complaining and motivating herself:

“I only allow myself one day to feel sorry for myself. People who complain really get on my nerves. When I’m not feeling my best I ask myself, ‘What are you gonna do about it?’ I use the negativity to fuel the transformation into a better me.”

On creating her own lane:

“There is room on this earth for many queens.  I have an authentic, God-given talent, drive, and longevity that will always separate me from everyone else. I’ve been fortunate to accomplish things that the younger generation of queens dream of accomplishing. I have no desire for anyone else’s throne. I am very comfortable in the throne I’ve been building for the past 15 years.”

Beyonce is a diva in control.  Love it!  For the entire story, visit the Complex website.

When Will Chris Brown Stop Twitter Beefin’?

So much for anger management.

R&B bad boy Chris Brown has once again found himself inside some Twitter drama.  What was supposed to be a compliment turned into a nasty war of words between Brown and Odd Future’s Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean:

Chris:  “I f–k wit Frank Ocean! Reminds me of a young James Fauntleroy or Kevin Cossum.”

Frank: “i f–ks wit chris brown, reminds me of a young sisqo or ike turner”

Chris:  “@frank_ocean it was a compliment you bitch ass n—a. Everybody claim to be the devil till they meet him,”

Chris:  “F–k odd future! Make sure y’all smalltime n—-s stick yo chess out when u speak to me…Ain’t no battery in my back! U just getting on a– n—-s! Don’t let them pills go to yo head! I was tryna help yo sales n—a. You f—-n clown! You and @f–ktyler would be casted great for planet of the apes!”

Tyler: “@chrisbrown What’s Wrong Christopher? Amber Rose Stole Your Style Bro Bro?”

Tyler: “@chrisbrown Why Are You Mad Tho? Like Really, You’re Bigger Than Us Christopher. You Act Like You Like To Eat Soup, Aren’t You A Role Model?”

Chris:  “To all my fans, I’m sorry these ignorant ass n—as got me down to their level.”

Tyler: “@thegame bro these n—s are frail,” he tweeted to rapper The Game.

Chris:  “The world is crazy. These n—as talk s–t, worship the devil and start s–t wit me and I’m the bad guy? F–king hilarious.  Y’all wanna know why I’m always in some shit? Becuz people continuously f–k wit you.”

A couple of thoughts:  I chuckled to myself at the Amber Rose comparison and Tyler calling him “Christopher.”  But, on a more serious note: I think they are all on the level of stupidity.  Chris put himself in the situation by reacting to it.  Celebrities complain about people that hide behind their computers and talk about them, yet, they do the same thing to each other.  An eye for an eye makes the world blind #imjustsayin.

Video: “She” Tyler, the Creator ft. Frank Ocean

Besides starting twitter beefs with Chris Brown, Tyler, the Creator has also been shooting music videos.  Today, he debuts the creepy visuals for “She,” the second single from his sophomore album Goblin.  Directed by Tyler and produced by Anthony Mandler, the video stars Tyler as a stalker while Odd Future member Frank Ocean plays many roles, including boyfriend, police officer, father of the girl being stalked and what I believe is a garden gnome…seriously.  Tyler is finally arrested by the police, but the ending leaves you wondering if it really happened.

Have you bought Goblin yet?  Watch “She” below:

Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Arrested

Tyler, the Creator of Odd Future had a lot to celebrate yesterday. He released his much anticipated sophomore album Goblin, which had amazing reviews.  Unfortunately, it looks as though a dark cloud hung over what should’ve been a great day.

It has been reported that while performing at Westchester High School in Los Angeles, Tyler was arrested.  Details of the arrest are not known at the time, but we do know that fellow Odd Future member was arrested as well.

Tyler was clearly upset when he tweeted this last night before a release show in West Hollywood:

“F**K POLICE F**K YOU ALL I HOPE YOU ALL DIE,” he tweeted. “I WILL NEVER RESPECT YOU.” Such a mature response, Tyler.

Odd Future member Frank Ocean was arrested late last month and had the same kind of reaction: “I swear if i weren’t sane in mind I’d throw a fuckin molotov in a cop car right now,” he vented.

Dear Odd Future, you will have no future if you keep getting arrested.

divaTunes: “She” Tyler, the Creator ft. Frank Ocean

Tyler, the Creator has caught the love bug on “She,” the second single from his solo album Goblin dropping May 10.  This is definitely a love song with a dark cloud over it.  I think I heard the word “stalking” once.  Frank Ocean makes the song a little smoother singing on the hook.

I love the whole Odd Future debate.  People either love them or hate them.  Personally, I don’t have any strong feelings.  I don’t think they’re the worst thing in hip hop, but I’m not blown away by them either.  They remind me of the early 90’s hip hop for some reason…and that’s just not original to me.  I’m excited to see what they will offer in the future.
