Gabrielle Union: "I Tried To Shoot My Rapist"

With the recent backlash that Rihanna has been receiving for her “Man Down” video another celebrity is jumping to her defense…..Gabrielle Union.

After viewing the video Gabby came out revealing her own heart breaking story about how she was raped,

“Saw ‘Man Down’ by @rihanna. Every victim/survivor of rape is unique, including how they THINK they’d like justice 2 be handed out.  During my rape I tried 2 shoot my rapist, bt I missed. Over the yrs I realized tht killin my rapist would’ve added insult 2 injury. The DESIRE 2 kill someone whose abused/raped u is understandable, bt unless its self defense n the moment 2 save ur life, just ADDS 2 ur troubles #mandown.”

After support was shown for her comment she later went on to say,

“Stranger who robbed the store I worked at,” she said, identifying her rapist. “He put his gun dwn durin the rape & asked me 2 [hand] it 2 him.”

“#Mandown video did a GREAT job of getting the ENTIRE world TALKING abt RAPE.  I hope tht it leads 2 HEALING & PREVENTS RAPE.”

Gabrielle Union took a huge step by coming out with her story but I see the light in the message. I don’t encourage violence of any kind but the over all message of Rihanna’s video was to bring what is a touchy subject to the forefront. While the video may be graphic, it’s in no manner telling rape victims to find their rapist and shoot them. Many will disagree but to each his own.

Rihanna Fires Back at PTC Critics

Yesterday, we told you that the Parent’s Television Council didn’t approve of Rihanna’s visuals to “Man Down.”  In the video, Ri-Ri kills a man who raped her.  PTC describes the video as “cold, calculated murder” and go back to the Chris Brown comparisons (which are getting old by the way).  We all know Rihanna to be an outspoken artist and this is what she has to say:

“I’m a 23 year old rockstar with NO KIDS! What’s up with everybody wantin me to be a parent? I’m just a girl, I can only be your/our voice!” tweeted RiRi. “Cuz we all know how difficult/embarrassing it is to communicate touchy subject matters to anyone especially our parents!”

“And this is why! Cuz we turn the other cheek! U can’t hide your kids from society,or they’ll never learn how to adapt! This is the REAL WORLD!” she added. “The music industry isn’t exactly Parents R Us! We have the freedom to make art, LET US! Its your job to make sure they dont turn out like US.”

Whose side are you on?

Video: 'Man Down' Rihanna

Rihanna takes it back to the islands for the “Man Down” visuals.  The video, directed by her frequent collaborator Anthony Mandler, opens with Rihanna shooting a man in the middle of a train station.  It then takes you back to the day before and shows Ri-Ri working her long, red locks and super cute outfits through the Jamaican streets.  By the end of the video, we find out that the man she shot was abusing her.  I’m not sure what kind of message she is trying to convey, but the video is shot beautifully and of course, she looks great.

Sidebar: Did ya’ll see her sippin’ on that VitaCoco.  That’s product placement for ya! Ri-Ri is a spokesperson for the popular drink.

divaFotos: Rihanna Goes Tattoo Shopping

As if all the tattoos she has now isn’t enough. Rihanna was spotted in NYC this memorial weekend looking for potential ideas for her newest tattoo. Her most recent one was inked on her after the “incident” and was of a gun on her ribcage.

She rocked a long black dress with a split reaching her thigh, comfy black sneakers and a denim Prada bag. Definitely one her dressed down looks because we all know this diva loves to put it on.

She also tweeted about her upcoming video Man Down which will be premiering on BET’s 106 & Park.

“ManDownTOMORROW on @BET @106andpark its #Gritty #GULLY #Emotional #JAMRock Very strong underlying message 4 girls like me! #listentoyomama”

Anthony Mandler Talks Rihanna and ‘Man Down’ Video

“Man Down” is definitely one of the most popular songs off her platinum album LOUD and it looks like we have  a video to look forward to.  Frequent collaborator Anthony Mandler talked to MTV about the video and what we can expect from the popstar:

“We’ve done 16 videos together; they’re not all tough,” Mandler said when asked about what fans can expect from the new clip. ” ‘If I Never See Your Face Again,’ ‘Hate That I Love You,’ ‘Take a Bow’… Yeah, I mean, I’m known for the ‘Disturbia’s and the ‘Russian Roulette’s and things like that, but ‘Only Girl (In the World)’ is certainly an ethereal kind of empowering, beauty-filled video and what we’re coming with next … is certainly gonna flip peoples’ minds with ‘Man Down.’ “

So far, there aren’t any details about the video.  All we know is that fans will be talking.  ‘Man Down’ is about a woman who shoots a man and is looking for forgiveness.  I predict guns and tears.

“We shot the video last month in Jamaica and it’s my favorite song she’s ever recorded, so I was really excited to get involved,” he said. “And it’s just one of those songs that demands a strong narrative and visual, and let’s just say she let me go all the way. So I think you can expect something that’s dramatic and shocking and intense and emotional and uplifting and enlightening.”
