The “Juicy” Issue of Vibe has finally hit magazine shelves and we have highlights from the cover story: Kelly Rowland. See what she has to say about her first solo success, Destiny’s Child and being down with “the swirl:”
On the success of “Dilemma:”
No, I really wasn’t. And I was the first one from the group to have that level of success outside of the group. That bugged me out. I was very… I wasn’t ready. The song blew up and Columbia decided to rush out your solo record.Yeah. The plan was for Beyoncé to drop a solo record fi rst. But with the success of the song, they decided to put my album out first. They gave me 90 days to do an entire record.
On the press making assumptions about Destiny’s Child:
They want me to say that I can’t stand Michelle. That I can’t stand Beyoncé. But that’s not the case. It’s real love. Sorry, it’s a boring story. I take that back. I’m not sorry. We can support each other. That’s the way it should be. You hear too many stories about women bickering. And that’s not the case with us.
On whether there’s tension between her and former manager Matthew Knowles:
No. It was just a feeling of growing and wanting to call my own shots. That was it. I thank Mathew for everything he’s done for me. He made me a millionaire at 18 years old. And then I felt like, “Well, I’m an adult now and I want to do things this way.”
On whether she wants a “Mr. Right Now” or “Mr. Right:”
I like a Mr. Right. I don’t want them hopping around with Sarah, Michelle, Jessica… I want him to be mine.
On whether she dates outside of her race:
Absolutely. [Laughs] I’ve been down with the swirl.

Kelly Rowland had quite the wardrobe malfunction this past weekend while performing at 4Sixty6 club in New Jersey. Completely unaware of the malfunction, Kelly continued to rock the crowd. Following the show the R&B star joked about it tweeting:
‘New Jersey crowd was amazing!! hope you enjoyed the show and didnt mind the peekaboo LOL!!! #kanyeshrug #stuffhappens’

Congrats are definitely in order for Kelly Rowland. The “Motivation” singer made her highest solo debut yet with her third solo album Here I Am. The album debuted at the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart with 77,000 copies sold.
Her first album, Simply Deep, debuted at the #12 spot with 77,000 units back in 2003. Miss Kelly moved 83,000 units at the #6 spot back in 2006.
Honorable mentions go to the late Amy Winehouse, who’s groundbreaking album Back to Black came in at #4 with 54,000 copies sold. As predicted, her album sales spiked enormously following her death.
Adele ‘s reign still won’t let up. Her album 21 sits comfortably in the #2 spot with 83,000 units sold. Beyonce’s 4 drops from the #2 spot to the #6 spot with 41,000.
Are we surprised that all of these beautiful divas are running the charts? NO!!!!
The late, great Amy Winehouse covers Vibe’s “Juice Issue” dropping August 16. The other cover features Kelly Rowland (click here to take a peek). In the issue, Amy’s frequent collaborator and close friend Salaam Remi recalls his last days with the British singer:
I’m in London now. I’m out here because [Amy and I] were supposed to go to a wedding today. And before I could get to her yesterday she passed. We were going to the wedding of Nick Symansky, who is the person who really found her. He found her when he was a scout at 19. And he was the manager before they got the Universal deal.
They went ahead with the wedding. All I could do was sit there and imagine how many jokes she would have been cracking with me. We were in the middle of working on the album. She finished writing the record. We just hadn’t recorded.
For the last couple of weeks we were video chatting regularly. I was just talking to Nas. Both her and Nas were born on September 14, so we were going to Barbados with all of them for her birthday. She really doesn’t look forward to her birthday, you know what I’m saying?
Still so sad. Rest in peace.
In an interview with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, Kelly Rowland revealed that she would be hitting the road with Chris Brown in September for a joint tour. She also spoke on her admiration for him and said that he was a major influence on the just released Here I Am:
“I’m also going on tour with Chris Brown in September. I’m so excited about that. Getting ready for that show — literally getting ready. I’m sitting up here emailing and all that kind of stuff, finding people now.”
“I think that’s what I admire about artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna, who don’t mind putting it all on their album. Who cares? It’s music, and they’re making it: great music. And I’m proud of that, that we do have a generation that is just making great music, period.”
Chris Brown made the same announcement to his fans via Twitter:
“Me and Kelly Rowland along with other incredible artists are going on tour!!!! I’ll let u know who else is on later! Lol.”
I think it’s interesting how Kelly talked about admiring Chris and Rihanna’s ability to put it all out there when it comes to their music. I actually think those two would be great on tour together….but that’s obviously not going to happen. At the end of the day, this is a great business decision. Both Chris and Kelly are the “it” artists of the moment. Money will definitely be made.
Are you excited for Kelly and Chris’ joint tour?!
