Kelly Rowland Talks Mr. Right, DC and Interracial Dating with VIBE

The “Juicy” Issue of Vibe has finally hit magazine shelves and we have highlights from the cover story: Kelly Rowland.  See what she has to say about her first solo success, Destiny’s Child and being down with “the swirl:”

On the success of “Dilemma:”

No, I really wasn’t. And I was the first one from the group to have that level of success outside of the group. That bugged me out. I was very… I wasn’t ready. The song blew up and Columbia decided to rush out your solo record.Yeah. The plan was for Beyoncé to drop a solo record fi rst. But with the success of the song, they decided to put my album out first. They gave me 90 days to do an entire record.

On the press making assumptions about Destiny’s Child:

They want me to say that I can’t stand Michelle. That I can’t stand Beyoncé. But that’s not the case. It’s real love. Sorry, it’s a boring story. I take that back. I’m not sorry. We can support each other. That’s the way it should be. You hear too many stories about women bickering. And that’s not the case with us.

On whether there’s tension between her and former manager Matthew Knowles:

No. It was just a feeling of growing and wanting to call my own shots. That was it. I thank Mathew for everything he’s done for me. He made me a millionaire at 18 years old. And then I felt like, “Well, I’m an adult now and I want to do things this way.”

On whether she wants a “Mr. Right Now” or “Mr. Right:”

I like a Mr. Right. I don’t want them hopping around with Sarah, Michelle, Jessica… I want him to be mine.

On whether she dates outside of her race:

Absolutely. [Laughs] I’ve been down with the swirl.

Kelly Rowland’s ‘Here I Am’ Makes Top 3 Debut

Congrats are definitely in order for Kelly Rowland.  The “Motivation” singer made her highest solo debut yet with her third solo album Here I Am.  The album debuted at the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart with 77,000 copies sold.

Her first album, Simply Deep, debuted at the #12 spot with 77,000 units back in 2003. Miss Kelly moved 83,000 units at the #6 spot back in 2006.

Honorable mentions go to the late Amy Winehouse, who’s groundbreaking album Back to Black came in at #4 with 54,000 copies sold.  As predicted, her album sales spiked enormously following her death.

Adele ‘s reign still won’t let up.  Her album 21 sits comfortably in the #2 spot with 83,000 units sold.  Beyonce’s 4 drops from the #2 spot to the #6 spot with 41,000.

Are we surprised that all of these beautiful divas are running the charts? NO!!!!

Amy Winehouse Covers Vibe

The late, great Amy Winehouse covers Vibe’s “Juice Issue” dropping August 16.  The other cover features Kelly Rowland (click here to take a peek).  In the issue, Amy’s frequent collaborator and close friend Salaam Remi recalls his last days with the British singer:

I’m in London now. I’m out here because [Amy and I] were supposed to go to a wedding today. And before I could get to her yesterday she passed. We were going to the wedding of Nick Symansky, who is the person who really found her. He found her when he was a scout at 19. And he was the manager before they got the Universal deal.

They went ahead with the wedding. All I could do was sit there and imagine how many jokes she would have been cracking with me. We were in the middle of working on the album. She finished writing the record. We just hadn’t recorded.

For the last couple of weeks we were video chatting regularly. I was just talking to Nas. Both her and Nas were born on September 14, so we were going to Barbados with all of them for her birthday. She really doesn’t look forward to her birthday, you know what I’m saying?

Still so sad.  Rest in peace.

Chris Brown and Kelly Rowland to Tour Together

In an interview with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, Kelly Rowland revealed that she would be hitting the road with Chris Brown in September for a joint tour.  She also spoke on her admiration for him and said that he was a major influence on the just released Here I Am:

“I’m also going on tour with Chris Brown in September. I’m so excited about that. Getting ready for that show — literally getting ready. I’m sitting up here emailing and all that kind of stuff, finding people now.”

“I think that’s what I admire about artists like Chris Brown and Rihanna, who don’t mind putting it all on their album. Who cares? It’s music, and they’re making it: great music. And I’m proud of that, that we do have a generation that is just making great music, period.”

Chris Brown made the same announcement to his fans via Twitter:

“Me and Kelly Rowland along with other incredible artists are going on tour!!!! I’ll let u know who else is on later! Lol.”

I think it’s interesting how Kelly talked about admiring Chris and Rihanna’s ability to put it all out there when it comes to their music.  I actually think those two would be great on tour together….but that’s obviously not going to happen.  At the end of the day, this is a great business decision.  Both Chris and Kelly are the “it” artists of the moment.  Money will definitely be made.

Are you excited for Kelly and Chris’ joint tour?!

Audio: Kelly Rowland Talks New Album ‘Here I Am’ with Russ Parr

Yesterday morning  (7/25) Kelly Rowland chatted with Russ Parr about marriage, her new album Here I Am and her relationship with Beyonce and Michelle. She also touches on the most important rules for her life:

“My faith has gotten me to where I am and kept me in the game 15 years, even when I wanted to give up.”

Listen to the interview below:

Kelly Rowland Goes Shirtless for Vibe

The men will definitely want to be Kelly Rowland’s motivation after seeing her on the cover of Vibe’s “Juice Issue.”  Kelly looks gorg with her now signature long locks and hands strategically placed across her chest.

Interview highlights:

VIBE: The last album didn’t do well in the States. It did better overseas, particularly in Europe. Do you feel more appreciated in Europe?
Kelly Rowland: No, not really. People still compare me to B over there. I said in an interview recently, ‘You know, if you guys would be a little bit more intelligent and ask me about myself we’ll have a much better interview.’ You can’t want a story from me and keep asking me about the past.

When you walked away from that last meeting with Mathew, did you feel an “exhale” moment?
I did, but I also felt like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done?!’ I stayed in the house for two days. I was sad. It was like a funeral. I had to deaden that situation in order to start fresh. That’s a very long time to have the same manager and the same label.

What about your personal relationship with Mathew Knowles. Do you still talk to him?
Mathew sent me flowers for my birthday!

But do you talk to him?
It’s… I respect him above anything.

Speaking of this road we’re going on… Let’s talk about the song “Motivation.” I have to admit, the song went completely over my head. I thought you were talking about working out.
[Laughs] No, honey.

When you heard the song, did you think, This may be too racy for my image?
Not at all. Every woman knows what that feels like—hopefully. But everyone doesn’t expect Kelly to sing about it. This is true. But I just loved the song so much. And yes, I can relate to it. I came into my sexuality while I was recording this album. I can walk into a sex shop now and not worry about what people would say if they saw me in there.

You really do that? Go to sex shops?
Yeah! With friends on the low. I go at the right time. Nighttime. 1 a.m. The really good ones are open that late.

LOL @ the interviewer thinking “Motivation” was about exercise.  Come on now!!!  You can read the full interview when it hits stands August 16.  The second cover will be an Amy Winehouse tribute.

Are you buying Here I Am today?

divaFotos: Kelly Rowland ‘Here I Am’ Promo Pics

Kelly Rowland is baring all in a photoshoot promoting Here I Am, dropping this upcoming Tuesday.  Kelly looks smokin’ and clearly hits the gym on a daily basis.  Now there’s some motivation!!

Earlier this week, producer Jeff Bhasker, who’s worked with Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Kelly, had this to say about her number one hit “Motivation” on Twitter:

“How can this KR song with the weakest beat and melody of all time be the #1 song on urban!? Oh yeah. [Lil] Wayne.[…]I just listened to ‘Motivation’ again to see if I was to harsh in my critique. I wasn’t. The lyrics are horrid as well.”

Kelly’s response to BET.com:

“You know what, the record speaks for itself. Opinions are like **sholes, everybody’s got one. He’s made wonderful music with my sister and other artists. There’s no reason for me to say anything negative. Cause I won’t tell you the thought that is really in my head. I’ll just kill ‘em with kindness.” <<<A very diva response.  LOVE it!!

divaTunes: ‘Feelin’ Me Right Now’ Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland is feeling herself in “Feelin’ Me Right Now,” another track from Here I Am, dropping next Tuesday.  Instead of singing to a man, she’s talking about that self love:

“She don’t need no Clyde, tonight she alright, she’s so Bonnie.”

This one’s definitely for all of the independent ladies.  Listen below:

50 Cents Calls Kelly Rowland ‘Most Underrated Female Soloist’

We all know 50 Cent for his outlandish comments on just about anything…but this may just be something I agree with him on.

The controversial MC sat down with MTV News on the set of Tony Yayo’s video for “Haters” in ATL this week and had this to say about Kelly:

“I’m so happy Kelly got that hit record. She’s due; she’s sodue. She’s the most underrated female soloist in the game, and it’s finally time for her…That’s why when it came time to do ‘Baby by Me,’ I wanted her to be in the video, because she was smoking hot everywhere else my record had to be hot at,” he said. “They thought I was doin’ her a favor because here in the U.S., they wasn’t hip.”

Most will agree that Kelly Rowland pretty much came second to Beyonce during the Destiny’s Child era, but 50 argues that she stands toe to toe with Queen B:

“There wasn’t no dance moves Beyoncé was doin’ that Kelly wasn’t doin’. It’s just the right song. You got the song, now you can forget about it. It’s going. They all did the same moves.”

He also commented on whether he considers Kelly or Beyonce more attractive:

“It’s your preference. If you look and say one is prettier than the other, I beg to differ — it’s just what you think is pretty.  I think it’s just time for her. This year is her year.”

Do you agree with Mr. Cent???

divaTunes: ‘Castle Made of Sand’ Pitbull ft. Kelly Rowland & Jamie Drastik

Pitbull takes a break from the partying and gets serious with “Castle Made of Sand, ” the second single from his upcoming album Planet Pit.  The DJ Frank E-produced track features Kelly Rowland on the hook and Pitbull artist Jamie Drastik with his own verse.  The song’s subject matter is Pit’s mom as well as his absentee father.

He told EW.com: “It shows another side of me. But yet it has that big pop rhythmic feel to it…I think that when that hits the radio, people are going to look at me in a whole different light.”

I think this song is definitely a good look.  It has a different subject matter, but still has that party feel we’re used to hearing.  Listen below:

Kelly Rowland's Father Pleads For Forgiveness

It sounds all to familiar, after years of neglect and abandonment a father wants back into their child’s life. Such is the case for singer Kelly Rowland. Her father Christopher Lovett has taken to the press to pronounce his love for his daughter and plea for forgiveness. He told the UK Mirror that he has not seen Kelly in 13 years and discusses his issues with substance abuse.

On his memories of Kelly Rowland
“Kelly, I love you with all my heart. Please forgive me and let me be your dad again.[…]“I loved her from the moment she took her first breath. I remember as clear as day Kelly and I singing together, from the moment she could talk. Our favorite songs were by Stevie Wonder. I would put one headphone in my ear and the other in hers and we would sing and sing, so happy to be together. But then I lost my job at a transportation company, sank into a depression about money and began drinking more and more. The failure to provide for my family fueled an anger that I will be ashamed of until my dying day. It wasn’t physical between me and Kelly’s mom, but there were many days and nights when Kelly would be bawling her eyes out, clutching my leg begging me, ‘Please daddy stop shouting at mummy’. That image of her howling, begging me to stop will haunt me forever. I really hoped I would get to make it up to her. Sadly I am still waiting for that day. But I can’t give up hope.  That’s why there is a room in my house which I have decorated especially for Kelly, just in case she comes through the front door.”

On the Development of His Alcoholism & Anger Issues
“I am a proud man and wanted the best for my family so when I lost my job I was utterly ashamed and hid from that shame with drink. When Doris challenged me, I would just lose it. No parent should scream and shout in front of their child, and I am sorry to say there were too many times to mention that Kelly heard me screaming abuse at her mother. Sometimes she would run to her bedroom screaming, others she would cling to my trouser leg begging me to stop. When the electricity was cut off and we received an eviction letter we agreed for Doris to take Kelly to her aunt’s house while I sorted things out.

On His Leaving & Never Seeing Kelly Again
Little did I know the day they left would be the last time I would see my wife and daughter ever again. Every time I phoned her aunt’s house she told me Kelly and her mom were out. I had no job, no money, no car and just no way of getting the 20 miles to where they were staying. When six months had passed I begged a friend for a ride to her aunt’s house and she told me they had moved to Texas. I begged her to give me an address, but she flat-out refused.”

I knew I had to stop drinking, get a job or I would never see my daughter again. And I did. But by then it was too late and they were gone, the two people I loved with all my heart and that tore me up and still does today.[…]I had heard she was doing well singing, but I didn’t know how well until I turned on the TV and saw her performing [with Destiny’s Child]. I cried and cried, with sadness but also with pride at what a wonderful, talented young woman Kelly had grown into.”

On Going to a Destiny’s Child Concert & Leaving Kelly a Note
“I sat for the whole concert in one of the cheap seats at the back with tears of joy and utter despair rolling down my face. I wrote a note and begged a security guard to pass it to her.

“It said, ‘Darling I have been looking for you. I am so proud of you and I love you so much and I just long to tell you that in person.  Love Dad’. But no matter how much I begged the guard he would not believe I was her father.”

On Wanting to Reconnect
“I own a big home now and have retired so I don’t want any of Kelly’s fortune, I just want her love. I just hope she does not become such a big star in England on X Factor that she forgets about her dad completely. I’m getting old now – I just hope she reads this and doesn’t leave getting back in touch with me before it is too late.”

Kelly must be taken back from all of this news. Whether she wants to reconnect is her decision and we’ll be locked in on the story as it develops.
