Since the tragic, untimely death of one of music’s greatest talents, Amy Winehouse’s record sales have seen a skyrocket in numbers sold. Since the singer’s death this past Saturday and according to Nielsen SoundScan, Amy’s hit album Back To Black has shot to the #9 position on the Billboard 200 this week selling 37,000 copies. While just last week only 1,000 copies were sold.
Sales on Frank, Amy’s debut, have also seen a rise in numbers. Reaching #57 and selling 8,000 in sales which were most accounted for digital purchases. Back To Black and Frank have overall sold 95 percent in digital sales.
In the same fashion that Michael Jackson’s music sold whooping numbers after his passing, it looks as though the same will be sad for Amy Winehouse. Sales figures are expected to go even higher come next week.
Music lost a true talent today. Blued eyed soul singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her flat in Northern London’s Camden Square. She was just 27 years old.
“Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased,” read a press release from the Metropolitan Police. “On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”
Although Amy has publicly battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, she will be remembered for making soul music loved by critics and fans alike. She burst onto the scene in 2003 with her debut album Frank and solidified her superstardom in 2006 with Back to Black. The latter album earned her six Grammy nominations, five of which she won in 2008. She joins the infamous “27 Club”; other artists who have died at the age of 27 include The Doors front man Jim Morrison, legendary guitarist Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Jopin and Nirvana singer Kirt Cobain.
Amy’s mom Janis had this to say about her daughter back in 2008: ‘I’ve known for a long time that my daughter has problems. But seeing it on screen rammed it home. I realise my daughter could be dead within the year. We’re watching her kill herself, slowly. I’ve already come to terms with her dead. I’ve steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because the drugs will get her if she stays on this road.” <<<sad.
Just two days before her death, Amy appeared at the Itunes Music Festival in London to support her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, who’s signed to Winehouse’s Lioness Records. Bromfield performed “Mama Said” while Amy danced along and mouthed the lyrics beside her. Watch a happier Amy with Dionne and her 2008 Grammy performance below:
