‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Sets Box Office Record

In somewhat surprising news (to the critics at least), 20th Century Fox’s Planet of the Apes dominated this weekend’s box office with a total of $54.8 million in sales.  The film, starring James Franco, Slumdog Millionaire’s Frieda Pinto and Andy Serkis as “Ceasar,” was made with a budget of $93 million.

The film has is now the fourth largest August opening ever.  The three films ahead of it are The Bourne Ultimatum (69.3 million), Rush Hour 2 (67.4 million) and Signs (60.1 million).
