divaMissioN Artist Spotlight: TJ Evans
In the music industry, it can be hard to weed out the pre-packaged and semi-talented artists to get to what matters most: the genuine, soulful and uber-talented ones. Lucky for us here at divaMissioN, one of those few has fallen into our laps.
Meet TJ Evans. You’ve probably never heard of her. If you think that’s because she’s new to music, you are highly mistaken. The music lineage in her family goes way back. Her family includes her great uncle, legendary New Orleans trumpeter Peter Bocage, piano giant Eddie Bo, her grandmother who was an opening act for Ray Charles, and her own mother who toured as a vocalist with George Clinton’s Brides of Funkenstein.
You will definitely hear TJ’s musical influences in her music. There is a rawness to her voice that can only be described in one simple word: SOULFUL. Her music will bring you back to the good ol’ days: back when musicians played instruments and getting a record deal was about the voice and its ability to move an audience. Perhaps its her wide range of influences that make her so refreshing; they range from artists like Luther Vandross to Metallica.
Or could it be her already impressive involvement with the music industry? A musician since age 14, TJ spent time as an freelance music journalist, interviewing and photographing artists like Parliament Funkadelic, Amuse, and Every Avenue.
Whatever you do, don’t make any preconceived notions based on the guitar-totin’ TJ’s tattoos or quiet demeanor; her music does all of the talking. divaMissioN has an exclusive; two new tracks from Evans. The first is “On Shakey Ground,” a collaboration with the legendary MC Grandmaster Jay. The second, “Paradiso,” is a partnership between TJ and her uncle, THE Cordell “Boogie” Mosson, of Parliament Funkadelic.
Both singles officially drop May 31 and are quite a departure from what we’re hearing on the radio today-how refreshing! If you like what you see and hear, be sure to follow her on Twitter and join her fan page on Facebook.
